As most of you might have noticed I love to watch TV shows. They vary in style and theme, but I like them non the less. So, there's this big thing called a Pilot episode as it can make or break a new show. Even if they manage to get through the network's trials and pass the test group, they might still fail in front of a bigger audience. Why am I talking about this? Well, you see, the fall season just began and that always brings new shows to try and on Thursday I saw one of the best pilots ever.
It belongs to a new show called: Arrow. It's (I think) based on a comic book character the Green Arrow. It was truly awesome. I am well known for my love towards comic books and superheros. This Green Arrow belongs to the DC Comic family. I am more of a Marvel Comics gal, but hey, Batman may be the best character ever. Anyway, back to the pilot. I will not spoil it, as it was so mind boggling it needs to be watched. I will say this much: there were some really absurd parts to the story, but other than that it was very well put together. The main character did remind me of Batman / Bruce Wayne as he is a rich man who disappears and comes back as a revenge fueled monster man. The basic absurdities were: 1. he was on a deserted island for 5 years and by magic became a computer genius who can hack into banks and wire money from the bad guys. 2. he developed a keen love towards park-our. 3. where in hell did he get that bow and those arrows from? They were totally high end store products and he magically obtained them while being on an empty island.
Those were kind of disturbing what the firetruck moments, but they were paid up by those awesome battle scenes. The best part is (maybe also the biggest difference between Batman) that he actually kills his enemies. Or at least makes an effort to do so. He doesn't just knock them unconscious for the police to deal with, he actually is bad-ass and snaps their necks or shoots them with his awesome bow and arrows. Loved it.
This is one of those rare pilots where I find myself wishing I could watch the next episode. Sadly there's almost always a week long wait. Anyway, this particular pilot made me think about my favorite TV show's pilots as well. Did I like them? or did they need a few more episodes to warm my heart? I know that Supernatural was an instant love (love at first sight you may say), but The Vampire Diaries needed some time. I adore Ian Somerhalder and I enjoyed the books, but the first 5 episodes were kind of badly acted. Especially uncomfortable was the pilot. If I hadn't had prior affections I might have stopped there and would be missing out on an awesome show.
As a keen TV programs follower, I understand how huge a pilot is and how much is riding on it. And because of that I recommend we give each TV show at least 2 episodes before we make up our mind about it. The actors need time to get into their characters and the crew needs time to figure things out as well. So, let's be a bit more patient and share our time with the billion dollar industry that is entertainment.
xoxo Regina
